SYOT

SYOT (See Your Own Tradition) is an electronic jazz trio from Seoul, drawing inspiration from Korean traditional music. Producer and multi-instrumentalist G.QOO, jazz pianist and vocalist Hanbeen Park, and gayageum player Yoolim Lee create music that moves between Korean tradition, jazz, and electronic club music.

The sharp attack and bending tones of the gayageum meet jazz-rich piano harmony, fluid improvisation, bass, and electronics. Rather than treating these elements as separate genres to be combined, SYOT lets them interact inside grooves shaped by UK garage, house, drum & bass, and other forms of contemporary electronic music. The result is unmistakably Korean, but built to move.

Following their debut album NAVI and a continuing series of releases, SYOT has been featured by COLORS Listen and international music publications including Songlines and MESMERIZED. On stage, the trio brings the same interplay into a more physical form, moving freely between tightly constructed electronic arrangements and live improvisation.

THE NAME SEE YOUR OWN TRADITION REFLECTS THE BAND’S APPROACH: TRADITION IS NOT SOMETHING TO PRESERVE AT A DISTANCE, BUT SOMETHING TO EXPERIENCE, QUESTION, AND REIMAGINE IN THE PRESENT. FOR SYOT, KOREAN TRADITION IS NOT A GENRE OR AN ORNAMENT — IT IS A LIVING MUSICAL LANGUAGE THAT CAN CONTINUE TO CHANGE.
